Sophia Webb is a London based papercut artist and illustrator.
Her striking collections are designed to brighten daily life and celebrate the joy of small detail. Each intricate work weaves together a narrative of nature, colour and pattern. Look a little closer and you’ll find the hidden story.
In their purest form, her papercuts are made with pencil, paper and scalpel. For more playful collages she adds elements of silkscreen, gouache and ink.
Her papercuts are made entirely by hand to ensure that each work is unique.
The time and energy used to create each artwork is as important as the final piece.
Sophia's Story
Born in Scotland, Sophia grew up surrounded by creativity.
Her artistic family taught her to find the beauty and fun in life; mixing the sublime with the ridiculous.
After dabbling in creative arts at school, Sophia pursued her love of the outdoors completing a BSc in Countryside Management at The University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, before immersing herself in interiors at an integrated design agency in New York.
Her career in art started at a London art print publisher, where as a researcher, she gathered inspiration from artists, past and present, while honing a "commercial eye", developing print collections for high street retailers.
Several years later, when picking up a scalpel for a creative community event, she realised she wanted to use her commercial experience to explore papercutting. Experiments led to commissions, which led to small collections of made-to-order pieces. Her work can be found from America to Singapore.
To balance the intensity of hyper-focussed papercutting, Sophia has several illustrative projects on the go; including private commissions and her own collection of illustrated products “From the Night Owl”.
Closer to home, she likes to use her skills for small scale charitable fundraising and local community events.
This is central to her ethos that small things can make a big difference.
